the end of May or beginning of June 1864.
Comments: Francis was born in Sussex County, Virginia and grew up there. Both of his parents had died by 1860 and Francis
moved in with his sister’s family, Catherine Sykes, in Franklin, TN. His sister’s house from the 1870’s is still standing on 4th Avenue
in Franklin, but uncertain if that was her house before the war. The 1860 Census shows Francis attending school which makes him a
good candidate for one of the Harpeth Academy students that walked out with Captain Hanner. He had one brother fight in a North
Carolina unit and two in Virginia units. His brother Andrew of the 3rd Virginia died of Pneumonia in 1863.
Shortly after enlisting he got sick and returned to Franklin to recover until July 1861. He was promoted to 2nd Corporal at the
Company’s reorganization April 30, 1862 in Mississippi. William Pollard states every Officer and NCO present of the company was
killed or wounded at the Battle of Perryville. Francis is not on the list of casualties which would imply he was not present for that
battle. On June 6, 1863, he was promoted to 5th Sergeant to replace William Hughes who had been killed at Perryville. He was
wounded slightly at Chickamauga in September 1863. George Nichols states on a post war roster that he was killed at New Hope
Church, GA 1864, which lasted from the end of May to the beginning of June 1864. The circumstances of his death are unknown
since the 1st Tennessee did not see heavy action at this fight. On May 26, they were sent to support Bate’s Division’s attack near
Dallas, GA and it seems likely this is where Francis met his end.
