Comments: Thomas was born and raised in Brentwood, TN at the family plantation of Pleasant View off of modern day Concord
Road. The house is still standing and part of the Governor’s Club. His brothers Meredith and Robert also served in the Williamson
Grays. His older brother William served in the 55th Tennessee Infantry. The 1860 Census shows Thomas was attending school. It
is uncertain if he attended Boiling Springs Academy close to his house or if was a student at Harpeth Academy in Franklin. He
enlisted at the company’s formation but was discharged on April 27, 1862 at Corinth, MS for Disability.
Following the war he married Margaret Burns in November 1868 according to Nashville Newspaper. The couple had at least three
children. Thomas moved to Nashville in 1867 and worked as a salesman and clerk before going into business for himself. He
opened a shoe store with his brother Robert called T.E. Winstead & Co. across the street from the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville
on Cherry Street [now called 4th Avenue] in 1869. It appears this partnership lasted until around 1888 when Robert no longer
appears in the Nashville City Directory as working with his brother. Robert switched careers and decided to become a real estate
agent. Thomas continued running his shoe store until his death. In 1905, Thomas died from Cirrhosis of the Liver and Interstitial
Nephritis due to his drinking alcohol and morphine habit, according to his death certificate.
