Comments: Robert was born and raised in Brentwood, TN at the family plantation of Pleasant View off of modern day Concord
Road. The house is still standing and part of the Governor’s Club. His brothers Meredith and Thomas also served in the Williamson
Grays. His older brother William served in the 55th Tennessee Infantry. The 1860 Census shows Robert was teaching school. It is
uncertain which school he was teaching at. He enlisted at the company’s formation but was sick beginning in August 1861. On
December 15, 1861 he was discharged for disability at Huntersville, VA. His obituary in the Tennessean Newspaper in 1909 states
he was a member of “Morgan’s Band” but no evidence has been found to support this claim. William Pollard mentions Robert gave
him a ride home from Nashville after the war ended.
Following the war he married Fannie Davis around 1878 based on the 1900 Census and the couple never had children. Robert
moved to Nashville in 1869, and opened a shoe store with his brother Thomas called T.E. Winstead & Co. across the street from the
Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville on Cherry Street [now called 4th Avenue] in 1869. It appears this partnership lasted until around
1888 when Robert no longer appears in the Nashville City Directory as working with his brother. Robert switched careers and
decided to become a real estate agent in 1888. Thomas continued running his shoe store until his death. According to his obituary
he was working for Caldwell & Chapman at the time of his death. Robert lived in the Maxwell House Hotel for about five years after
moving to Nashville. He started living with his brother Thomas (which lasted until about 1900). In 1909, Robert died from Heart
Failure. He is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery next to his wife.
