Prior to this he had married Martha Reese and the couple had one daughter. Sometime before the outbreak of the Civil War John had moved back to Williamson County and enlisted in the Williamson Grays at their formation. His service did not last long, he was discharged on July 18, 1861 at Camp Cheatham. According to a Review and Journal article from June 21, 1883: "Thomas Handy and John E. Thweatt left the company and returned home, they both being over the age required for soldiers, and too feeble to undergo the campaign before us." Following his military service he returned home and continued farming. On the 1870 Census he was working a farm in District 5 (area south of Franklin). By the 1880 Census he was living with his daughter’s family and his wife had passed away. John died in 1881 and is buried in William White Cemetery off of Hwy 96 West in the modern day Westhaven Subdivision.
