David James Taylor
DOB:  August 25, 1839 DOD:  December 1, 1886 Age at Enlistment: 21 Date of Enlistment:  May 9, 1861 Place of Enlistment:  Franklin, TN Rank at Enlistment:  Private Rank at Discharge:  Private Casualty:  He was wounded in left hip and right shoulder at Perryville on October 8, 1862 and captured the next day.  Comments:  David was born and raised in Williamson County, TN.  The 1850 Census shows his family living in District 6 of Williamson County but by the 1860 Census his family had moved to District 16.  His family’s farm was on what is now Ragsdale Road in Brentwood and he would have been neighbors with the Winstead Brothers.  David enlisted at the company formation and his health appears to have been good since he shows as present on all rosters on his service record until the Battle of Perryville.  At this battle he received a gunshot wound to the left hip and right shoulder.  A doctor reported that he hip wound destroyed the hip joint and his shoulder was severely damaged.  He was captured the next day at a field hospital in Perryville.  On December 5, 1862, he boarded the steamboat City of Madison and was sent to Vicksburg to be exchanged.  Upon his return, Captain Atkeison described him as unfit for duty which a surgeon agree with and David was discharged on February 4, 1863 at Shelbyville, TN.  His discharge papers describe him as Complexion: Dark, Eyes: Dark, Hair: Black, Height: 5'8", Occupation: Farmer. After the war, David’s life is unknown.  He does not appear on the census for 1870 or 1880 with his family but he is buried in the Nolen Family Cemetery (his mother was a Nolen) on Ragsdale Road in Brentwood.  His mother is the only immediate family member buried with him so it is assumed he was a bachelor.
