Comments: John was born in Davidson County, TN but his family moved to “Creekside” in the 1850’s just a mile or so north of
Franklin on Franklin Road. The home is still standing today. Shute Knob, next to Roper’s Knob, in Franklin is named after his family.
John enlisted at the Company’s formation and was elected 4th Sergeant but lost his rank at the company reorganization in 1862 and
went down to Private. He is listed as being sick at the end of 1862. He transferred to the 10th Tennessee Cavalry, Company D on
April 25, 1863. John was promoted to Sergeant Major in the Cavalry but appears to have lost his rank when the 10th and 11th
Tennessee Cavalry Regiments consolidated and was made a Private again. John surrendered with the Cavalry at Citronelle, AL on
May 4, 1865 and was paroled May 10, 1865 at Gainesville, AL.
Following the war he married Narcissus Childress on Sept. 12, 1867 and the couple eventually had three children. John moved to
Nashville and became an attorney and had offices at 56 Cedar Street and later 68 ½ N Cherry Street (Now 4th Avenue). His actual
residence was in what was called White’s Bend but now is call Bordeaux. His house was near Whites Creek on what is now County
Hospital Road. He ran for and was elected to the 41st Tennessee State House of Representatives in 1878 and served two years.
John died on July 20, 1897 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville.
