Comments: Young was born and raised on a farm in District 5 (directly south of Franklin) of Williamson County. He enlisted in the
company at its formation in 1861 and appears as present on all rosters in his service record. On May 15, 1863, he purchased a
substitute and was discharged from further military service. His discharge papers describe him as Height: 5'9", Complexion: Sallow,
Eyes: Gray, Hair: Sandy, Occupation: Farmer. Sallow complexion is usually a sign of some sort of ailment so that may have
contributed to his desire to buy a substitute. Michael O’Neil took his place in the company ranks and deserted a short time after
enlisting. Shortly after he returned home he was arrested by the Federal troops in Franklin on August 3, 1863 but was released on
$2,000 bond.
Following the war, Young married Ida Bennett in Lamar County, TX on November 25, 1874. The two moved back to Franklin and had
four children. Young stayed in District 5 and ran a 360 acre farm off of modern day Kitrell Road near the intersection of Coleman
Road. He farmed for the rest of his life. Young died just 9 days after his wife Ida in 1908 and he is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery
in Section B.
