Comments: John was born on the Maury County side of Spring Hill, TN and appears to have grown up there. His mother died when
he was 12 and his father remarried and moved to Franklin sometime before 1860. John’s last name is uncertain. His service record
states it is McColpin and McColpin is also on his mother’s tombstone. However, his father’s tombstone in Franklin has McAlpin and
most census records show McAlpin. John enlisted at the company’s formation but contracted a lung disease shortly after the
regiment arrived in Virginia. He is first listed as sick in September 1861 at Hot Springs, VA and was discharged on November 12,
1861 at Huntersville, VA for lung disease. His discharge papers state he was born in Maury County, TN and is a bricklayer by
profession. Also describes him as Height: 5'9", Complexion: Fair, Eyes: Blue, Hair: Brown. According to Genealogy sources and
post war rosters, John never recovered from his illness and died at home. His date of death was most likely in 1862. There is
another John McColpin that served in the 6th TN and was killed at Shiloh. There are some sources that claim this is the same John
McColpin, but a review of the 6th TN’s McColpin show he enlisted in New Madrid, MO at the same time the McColpin in the 1st TN
was sick in Virginia.
