Comments: Henry was born and raised in Williamson County. Henry married a widow named Rosanna Ezell on December 28,1853.
His stepson William Ezell would serve in the Williamson Grays as well. On the 1860 Census, he is living in District 1 of Williamson
County (western part of the county) working as an overseer. Henry was brought in as a conscript in November of 1862. In March
and April of 1863 he was detailed to work on the fortifications around Shelbyville. His service record states he was captured at
Missionary Ridge, but he claims on his United Confederate Veterans Application that he was captured at Ringgold, GA. More likely
he was captured at the Battle of Graysville which is just outside of Ringgold. The 1st TN was the rear guard until they reached
Ringgold and then Cleburne’s Division took over. The chances of Henry being captured while at Ringgold would be slim for that
reason. Rock Island became his home after he was captured and in March 1864 he appears on roster stating he wishes to be loyal
and return to his home in Tennessee. His wish was not granted and he was released after taking oath on May 23, 1865.
By the 1870 Census, Henry is living in District 4 (around Thompson’s Station) working as a farmer. He also state he cannot read or
write. The 1880 Census states the same thing. In 1900, he could no longer support himself and neither could his children. He
applied to and was accepted into the Confederate Old Soldiers Home in Nashville where he died of heart failure in 1901. He is grave
#71 in the Tulip Grove Confederate Cemetery.
