Comments: The 1860 Census shows John living in the town of Franklin working as an overseer. There is no record of who John’s
parents were, but most of the Hill family lived in the Temple Hills area of Williamson County and it is assumed he is a relative of
theirs. There were two other Hill’s in the Company but no relation to either one can be found. John married Margaret Westbrook on
December 23, 1858. He was 21 and she was 15 years old. The couple had three sons. The youngest, also named John H. Hill,
was born on November 4, 1862 which is the same day John enlisted in the Confederate Army. John was recruited by Lieutenant
Woldridge of Company D while he was temporarily detached to bring in recruits. John became sick shortly after enlisting and his
record states he was in the hospital in January and February of 1863. John was wounded at Missionary Ridge in November 1863
and captured at the Battle of Atlanta in July 1864. He eventually was transferred to Camp Chase Prison Camp in Columbus, OH.
He contracted pneumonia that winter and died on January 6, 1865. He is grave number 711 in the Camp Chase Cemetery.
