Casualty: Wounded severely in the left heel at the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864. The wound paralyzed his foot.
Comments: James first appears in census records in 1850 living with his family in District 6 of Williamson County (Temple Hills
area). He became sick shortly after the 1st TN was sent to Virginia and is listed as being in the hospital at Hot Springs, VA in
September and October of 1861. James appears as present on every other roster until he was severely wounded at the Battle of
Atlanta on July 22, 1864. According to his pension application, he received a gunshot wound that entered his heel and passed
through his foot until stopped in the ball of his foot. A doctor cut the bullet out and James was able to keep his foot but it was
paralyzed for the rest of his life. He stayed in an Atlanta hospital before eventually being moved to Mississippi where James states
he was when the war ended. James had a rough life after the war, he suffered two strokes, one in 1882 and the other in 1883. His
sister took care of him until he was accepted into the Old Soldier’s Home in Nashville. James never married or had children. He
died at the Old Soldier’s Home in 1898 and is grave 42 at the Tulip Grove Cemetery near the Hermitage.
