Comments: Carey came from a wealthy family in Franklin. They lived west of Franklin on Highway 96 where Founder’s Pointe
subdivision now sits. Carey was born in Washington D.C. His father, Carey Allen Harris, Sr., started the Nashville Republican
newspaper in 1824. His father was a commissioner for the Indian Removal Act and was part of Andrew Jackson’s inner circle. He
passed away when Carey Jr., was six years old. The 1860 Census shows Carey Jr. working as a lawyer in Williamson County.
Carey was elected Lieutenant at the formation of the Williamson Grays. His time in the military was short lived. From June 1 to
October 31 he was ill and recovering at home in Franklin. He finally joined the regiment at the end of 1861 or beginning of 1862 but
his health did not improve. Carey resigned his commission on April 30, 1862. For unknown reasons, Carey Harris died young at the
age of 32 in 1868. He is buried in Treelawn Cemetery.
