His father built the house and it is still standing today. His father died by the time William was 4. William’s mother turned their home into a boarding house. The 1860 Census shows William was working as a Saddler. He served in the 1st Tennessee until December 1863 when he was part of the group of 1st Tennessee soldiers that stole horses and rode to join Forrest's command in the 19th Tennessee Cavalry. It appears he rejoined the Company later in the war and was present at the surrender of the regiment at Greensboro, NC on April 26, 1865. His whereabouts after the war have not been determined. George Nichols states his nickname was “Coon.”

The Kenneday house where William grew up, located on the corner of 5th and Church Street in Franklin. William’s younger sister took over the house and married a Kenneday, hence the name.
