When he enlisted in 1862 he already had seven children. John spent all of his life in District 5 of Williamson county which is the area just southwest of Franklin. The 1860 Census shows William Ezell of the Williamson Grays was living with him as well. John was detached as a nurse in Rome, GA in 1863 and sent back to the Company in 1864. He was captured on Hood's Retreat from Nashville and paroled in 1865. Following the end of the war he lived out his remaining years on his farm in District 5 until his death in 1907.
