Comments: Lawrence was sick in Franklin when the regiment left for Virginia in 1861 but had rejoined the Company by September.
He was detailed as a Wagon Driver off and on from December 1861 to April 1862. He deserted at Tullahoma, TN on June 28, 1863.
He appears in the 1850 Census, but no other record has been found of him.
After his desertion, he was captured and his report to the Federals was mentioned in the September 8, 1863 issue of the Pro-Union
Nashville Sentinel newspaper:
“A soldier named Jay Church, of Capt. Atkieison’s company (D), first Tennessee (rebel) infantry, who was made prisoner
yesterday, gives a gloomy picture of affairs in Dixie. He left his regiment in company with a boy named Ike Brown, of this town,
as it was crossing the Tennessee closely pressed by the Federals. He says that those of the Franklin boys who remain are
weary and despondent, anxious to be home once more, and are sick and tired of the rebellion. He represents Capt. Atkeison as
a clever fellow, well liked by his comrades, and subject to fits of sadness and despair. Black Hawk Nichols, who was wounded at
Perryville, is on duty again. The company has been reduced by death and disability from 113 to 38!”
Ike [Isaac] Brown is noted as deserting on July 16, 1863 with James Sweeney. It is uncertain how Isaac ended up with Lawrence
since they deserted several weeks apart.
