His older brothers Moscow and Todd were chosen to be officers of the 20th TN Infantry so Francis transferred to that regiment in July 1861. The 1860 Census shows he was attending school, which could mean he was one of the Harpeth Academy boys who enlisted with their Principal, James Hanner. He was severely wounded at Shiloh fighting with the 20th TN and discharged. His brother Moscow was captured and paroled at the Battle of Mill Springs and his other brother Todd would be killed on the family farm at the Battle of Franklin. After the war Francis traveled to South America before returning to the U.S. and settling in Texas. He married on February 19, 1874 to Mary Kate Lockett and the two had at least four children. The couple are still living in Texas in the 1880 Census but have moved to San Francisco by the 1900 Census. City Directories show he was involved in Mining while living in California. Francis died in San Francisco in 1923 and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.
