Comments: Thomas was the younger brother of Frank Carl who also served in the company. He grew up near Leiper’s Fork, TN on
what is now called Carl Road. Thomas was elected 2nd Sergeant at the Company’s formation but was eventually promoted to 3rd
Lieutenant at the Company’s reorganization in April 1862. He was severely wounded in the lower left leg at the Battle of Perryville on
October 8, 1862 and his wound was described by an examination board as “the large bone of his left leg was fractured.” Thomas was
taken to Lebanon, KY to recover where he was captured by the Federals. On November 15, 1862, he was exchanged at Vicksburg,
MS and sent to Rome, GA to recover. A Medical examination board found him unfit for duty and he resigned his commission in March
of 1863. Thomas returned home to Leiper’s Fork but was arrested by the U.S. troops stationed in Franklin on August 25, 1863. He
was released after posting a $50 bond. A year after his discharge he married Sallie Morton on August 31, 1864, and the couple had
over 10 children. Thomas lived out the rest of his days as a farmer in Leiper’s Fork near where he grew up on Carl Road. He is
buried in Hillsboro Cemetery in Leiper’s Fork.
