The 1850 census shows him living in Dickson County with his family. By the 1860 census he is living in District 1 of Williamson County, near what is now Fairview. He was neighbors with the Beards who also served in the company. According to the 1878 Williamson County Map his family’s farm was behind where Fairview Elemetary sits today. His health seems to have been good for most of the war and he shows as present on every roster in his service record. Garrett was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest at Chickamauga on September 19, 1863 according to Captain Atkeison’s account book. William Moss of the Williamson Grays, states in a letter that he was hiding behind the same tree as Lee Shute and Garrett Bradford during the fighting. Both Shute and Bradford were killed.
