Comments: Alexander was born in Tennessee and was the brother of George Tall Pine and Jacob Beard of the Williamson Grays.
His family farm was south of Fairview near what is now the intersection of Union Valley Road and Pinewood Road. The Bradfords in
the company lived nearby. He originally enlisted in the 2nd Kentucky Mounted Infantry on August 19, 1861 at Camp Boone. His
record states he traveled 150 miles to enlist. The 2nd Kentucky was apart of the defense of Fort Donelson and subsequently
Alexander was captured when the fort surrendered on February 16, 1862. He was sent to Camp Douglas and was exchanged in
September 1862. Alexander was traded for James Henderson of the Williamson Grays on May 1, 1863. He only served a few
months with the 1st Tennessee before he was captured at the Battle of Graysville, GA on November 26, 1863 following the retreat
from Missionary Ridge along with his brother George. The two were sent to Rock Island Prison where both joined the Union Army to
get out on October 13, 1864. Alexander was assigned to the 2nd U.S. Infantry Company I and sent to Kansas to protect against
Indian attacks. He enlisted for one year and was discharged on November 7, 1865. His enlistment papers describe him as Eyes:
Gray; Hair: Dark; Complexion: Dark; Height: 5’9”. It states he was born in Williamson County and is a farmer. There is not much
record of Alexander after the war but it is assumed he did not leave the family farm very much if he stayed in Tennessee at all. His
brother George was killed for joining the Yankees when he returned home, so Alexander may have fled the county. He never shows
up on another Census record for Williamson County.
