The 1850 and 1860 Census show he lived in the eastern suburbs of Franklin with his family. His service record states he was detached as nurse at Union Church in June and July of 1862. He received a severe gunshot wound in the right arm at Missionary Ridge on November 25, 1863. Afterwards he spent several months recuperating at Ocmulgee Hospital in Macon, GA where he was ultimately declared unfit for duty. As a member of the invalid corps he spent the remainder of his service as a hospital assistant. By his own account he was given a furlough just before the war ended. He was still on leave when it did end and instead of surrendering he just went home. He married Emma Shaw after the ware and they had several children. Elijah eventually moved to Nashville where he worked as carpenter. He was a member of the United Confederate Veterans and the Company B veterans organizations. His name appears on the Confederate Monument in Centennial Park in Nashville. He died in 1921 of Colitis (intestinal or colon issues) and is buried at Rest Haven Cemetery in Franklin, TN.
