He enlisted in Company D while the unit was stopped to join up with the 7th and 14th Tennessee Infantry Regiments in East Tennessee. It appears that John and his brother Levi left North Carolina to enlist in Tennessee. He transferred to the 5th North Carolina Cavalry Company A on November 1, 1862 where he was eventually promoted to 4th Corporal. After the war he married Mary Polly Briggs and had two children. He died in Bakersville, North Carolina in 1922 and buried in Bailey Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell County, NC.
